Returning to tempt you with a new adventure in 2009, you’re invited to pitch your tent in the stunning fairytale grounds of the ancient Port Eliot estate in Cornwall, cast aside all inhibition and explore: The new Heavenly Records venue on the banks of the estuary; the Boathouse, with One Minute Disco dishing up a crazy impromptu party on the hour, every hour; and Gavin Turk’s now-legendary House of Fairy Tales, set deep in the enchanted woodland garden.

In the Walled Garden, Barbara Hulanicki of Biba brings your vintage back to life; on the Bowling Green, Edwyn Collins performs a solo set with a reading by his wife, Grace Maxwell; Alain de Botton solves your work problems live on stage; in the Cabaret Tent, Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley DJs a history of teenage pop and Gaz Mayall whips up the rock n’ roll to a frenzy; in the Big Kitchen, Hardeep Singh Kholi cooks an Indian takeaway; while in St German’s church, Louis de Bernières plays his mandolin.

A wonderful array of experiences await - from a séance in the maze to yoga and massage on the estuary, dancing the night away to laughing until it hurts, sampling the magnificent selection of food stalls to kids’ games. Why not treat yourself to camping in a luxury yurt, teepee or Airstream Trailer in the beautiful Port Eliot park, landscaped by Repton? Volcom Peanut Butter & Rail Jam Final

April 18, 2009 @ 4:44 PM

PBRJ is back this winter in Europe with some new stops!

This year, at each stop the top three riders in each category, plus the best girl, will qualify for the European PBRJ Championships in Glacier 3000, Gstaad-Les Diablerets, Switzerland. The event is set to take place on the 18th of April 2009, and the top riders will bag free accommodation, sick prizes and a chance to get one of the four flight tickets to the US champs in Mammoth Mountain (which offers a whopping $25,000 prize purse).

Peanut Butter and Rail Jam is Volcom’s amateur snowboard contest series. Deviating from the established way snowboard contests are run, the folks at Volcom put their heads together and came up with a fresh format. Instead of having three rails in a row, they are side by side to create a rail zone. This boosts the energy level and fun nature of the contest because everyone is together, riding, hiking, and watching in a big group. There are three divisions; 15 & under, 16 & over and Girls. The contest runs in a jam format so there are no scheduled runs. You can hit each of the rails as many times as you want during your 20 minute heat. The judges only care about tricks you pull, so you don’t need to worry about falling. The event is absolutely free, on a first come first serve basis, and boasts tons of free prizes and PB&J sandwiches!

See you on the hill!

Spring in the Park

April 04, 2009 @ 10:31 AM

Down in the valley, the spring flowers will already flourish when snowboarders will once again put the pedal to the metal up there on Germany’s highest mountain, Zugspitze.

At SPRING IN THE PARK from the 4th to the 19th of April 2009, they will show their moves and tricks on the kickers and rails of the Terrain Park Zugspitze and improve their skills at the free coaching sessions.

Special offers for girls, equipment tests, photo shootings and the “Win the full PRO Package” contest on the 18th of April 2008 make this spring camp sponsored by K2 SNOWBOARDING and RIDE SNOWBOARDS the springtime highlight at Zugspitze. Apart from international coaches, Zugspitze local Xaver Hoffmann will be on site as a supervisor.

Free Coaching for everyone

At the daily coaching sessions, top snowboard pros of the K2 and RIDE teams will advise riders how to perfectly execute their tricks on rails and kickers. The first week is all about the girls: at the coaching with the pro riders of the K2 Women Alliance Team, they will stay among themselves in small groups to encourage the learning effect. Ursina Haller (SUI), Maike Haller (GER) and Julia Baumgartner (AUT) will take care of the female riders during the girls’ week. In addition, the female participants should look forward to a Welcome Package and many more special features.

For sure though, the boys are also welcome at the park for this first week of SPRING IN THE PARK. At the second week from the 12th to the 19th of April, the coaching is open to all who are willing to learn and take themselves to the next level. The snowboarders will be coached by K2 pros Andreas “Mone“ Monsberger (AUT), Colin Frei (SUI), Sebi Schmitz (GER), Alex Pfeffer (GER), Marcel Dextor (GER) as well as RIDE team riders Manuel Tapal (GER) and Jenz Kretschmer (GER). During the whole camp, Germany’s best-known freestyle snowboarder Xaver Hoffmann will be at place as a supervisor. Parties will again take place at the well-proven Lodge am Hausberg at Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Free tests and photo download

Through both weeks of SPRING IN THE PARK, Karl Killer and his shaping crew will groom the Terrain Park daily and keep it in a perfect condition. The participants will also have the opportunity to test the newest K2 and RIDE snowboard equipment for free: at the test booth, they will already find the tools of the upcoming 2009/10 season!
During both weeks, a pro photographer will take pictures of the participants. Later, they will have the opportunity to download the pix of their jumps and rail moves from zugspitze.de.

“Win the full PRO Package” contest

On Saturday, the 18th of April, the “Win the full PRO Package” contest at the Terrain Park will top off the 5th SPRING IN THE PARK spring camp. At this jam session, they will have the chance to show what they have learnt at the two weeks of SPRING IN THE PARK. The judges will look for the overall impression. The best female and the best male snowboarders will win a snowboard each. In addition, all winners will get a private coaching session with a K2 or RIDE pro to learn the tricks of the pros and anything else you need to know if you want to become a pro yourself.

Helly Hansen Adventure-X

March 28, 2009 @ 2:32 PM

Helly Hansen Adventure-X

Technical sportswear brand Helly Hansen, and adventure race organisers TrailPlus, are adding a third dimension to their hugely successful Adventure Challenge Series with the Helly Hansen Adventure-X at Lakeside YMCA National Centre, in Cumbria. The first adventure decathlon, it’s a ground-breaking multi-activity race on land and water. Expected to attract some of the UK’s leading adventure athletes, Adventure-X is limited to 30 teams (three per team) and has the added appeal of over £4,000 in prize money!

The unique format, described as a two day adventure decathlon, takes place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March 2009. Saturday will consist of nine exhilarating disciplines designed to get the heart pounding and the head spinning. They include rock climbing, assault course, adventure biathlon, mountain bike challenge, fell race, ropes challenge, sailing, canoeing, and night time navigation. The 10th event, and final test, is on the Sunday, when the Adventure-X teams compete with up to 200 other teams in the Helly Hansen Adventure Challenge Series.

The three person teams (male, female and mixed) must stay together, as their skill, endurance and resolve are tested on land and water. Notoriously difficult to focus on a target with a raised heart rate, the adventure biathlon is likely to feature a cardio sport, such as biking or running, followed by a target event such as archery. Those meanies.

The £4,000 prize fund will be split as £2,500 to the first overall team; £1,000 to the second; and £500 to the third.  Plus, 4th-6th placed teams, the first overall mixed team and the first overall female team will each receive Helly Hansen technical gear.

Registration is now open! To apply for an entry pack, or telephone 01457 855425. The team entry fee is £350 and includes two night’s camping at the venue and all equipment (excluding mountain bike and helmet).

Love Snow? Go Eco with the Animal Pro-team

The Animal Snowcamp is hitting the slopes again in 2009, and this year it’s even more eco friendly. To solve your dilemma of how to get your time on the mountain while also doing your bit to go green, this year the Animal Snowcamp will be based at the luxury BoardnLodge EcoLodge in the French Alps. In addition to the usual formula of a week riding with the Animal pro-team, pushing yourself on the mountain, and sharpening up your skills on the snow, this year you’ll also have eco-friendly accommodation. And if you come by train you’ll get an additional 5% discount and maybe even a free beer!

Riding with the Animal pro-snowboard team will boost your technical skills, mountain craft and all-round riding ability whilst soaking up the awesome terrain of the Tarantaise region. Each week is hosted by two of the team who are a valuable resource of insider tips, advice on equipment or just helping out with mastering a new move. This year the snowcamp is spreading the Animal love and opening it’s doors to skiiers for one week only, who will be in the good hands of Ben ‘Bungle’ Hawker and sharing the slopes with the snowboard crew.

Bourg St Maurice is base camp to high altitude resorts Les Arcs, St Foy, Val d’Isere and Tignes to name but a few, meaning the group will get to pick the best spots for the conditions each day.

The North Face Ski Challenge

North Face Ski Challenge

The North Face Ski Challenge 2009 offers young skiers the chance to show off their talents

Do you love the thrill of cruising perfect corduroy? Want the chance to show off on the rails and runs? Think you’ve got what it takes to be Europe’s next top skier? Then don’t miss out on Europe’s premier ski event for young free skiers, The North Face Ski Challenge 2009.

The North Face is looking for competitors aged 12-18 to compete in the upcoming Ski Challenge Tour. The Tour allows both girls and boys to take part in freestyle and freeride events in the hope of qualifying for the finals in Val Thorens.

Open to all European residents born between 1990-1996, the Tour is arguably the most important competition for young skiers hoping to break into the circuit - the top freeskiing finisher in the 16-18-year old category at the Val Thorens finals will win two-year sponsorship contracts from The North Face, Dynastar and Lange.

The top three podium finishers in each category at the finals will also be invited to stay in Val Thorens for an additional three days of filming and photography and all finalists will be rewarded with a bundle of gear giveaways.

Keith Byrne, strategic marketing manager for The North Face says: “The top competitors staying on means they’ll take home something concrete from the Challenge, including a photo portfolio and video reel, with which they can bolster their skiing careers.”

Sheffield Adventure Film Festival

February 27, 2009 @ 3:07 PM

Now in it’s fourth year, the ShAFF will take place at The Showroom Cinema in Sheffield on the weekend of Feb 27th to Mar 1st, 2009.

Climbing is likely to be the main focus of the festival in 2009, with what is probably the strongest contingent of climbing films ever on offer, plus a first of its kind: ‘The Great British Grade Debate’ with the BMC. A panel of the UK’s very best climbers will get together for a ‘Question Time’ style discussion in front of an interactive audience of 300, to discuss the fickle British climbing grading system. Adele Pennington, British mountaineer and climber of three of the world’s 8,000m peaks, will be giving a talk along with other pro climbers including Chris Sharma.

If climbing is not your bag don’t worry, there will be a whole host of engaging, funny, sad, action packed, thought provoking films on offer. There’s a guy who kayaks from Australia to New Zealand (that’s over 1,000 miles in 40 foot waves!), and another who throws himself off a 100 foot waterfall, BASE jumpers, skiers, snowboarders, mountain bikers, explorers, adventurers and a whole lot more.

Nissan Outdoor Games

February 20, 2009 @ 2:33 PM

The Nissan Outdoor Games is always an event to watch out for, with its unique blend of athletic performance, creativity and artistic filming, it really is one of a kind. The eagerly-anticipated event is a huge fixture in the action sports calendar and this year its set to be held in Chamonix, Mont-Blanc, from February 20-21, 2009.

Every year the event attracts the world’s best from the disciplines of mountaineering, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, BASE jumping and wingsuit flying. To be in with a chance of winning, the athletes have to partner up with professional cameramen and photographers from all over Europe and North America. They then have just seven days to film and edit a 5-minute film: a definite challenge.

The Mont Blanc mountain range has been selected as the playground and will play a big role in shaping the direction of the films. The demanding terrain will force the teams out of their comfort zones and is certain to create some spectacular.

Once the week’s up, the jury - made up of professional movie makers, photographers and athletes - will select the winner of the ‘Golden Peak’ award. After viewing the films on a massive screen the trophy is awarded to the best, along with additional awards including the Jury’s Special Award, Best Sports Sequence and Best Photographer.

If you’re there solely to spectate, you won’t be bored as activities on offer include ice climbing, mountain security workshops, slackline balance games, aerial shows with some seriously acrobatic paragliding and wingsuit flying, live concerts, autograph signing sessions and plenty stands for you to splash some cash.

If you fancy rubbing shoulders with some top athletes and seeing some unique cinema in the making, what are you waiting for?

AST Winter Dew Tour

February 19, 2009 @ 11:07 AM

After kicking off in Breckenridge, Colorado, then moving on to Vermont last month, the first ever AST Winter Dew Tour is set to make it’s final stop in Lake Tahoe, California, at the Northstar Resort from February 19-22, 2009.

The tour consists of three events, which will take place over the course of a year. Both male and female athletes will be on the roster and potential disciplines include superpipe, slopestyle and cross in both sports. The competition structure remains similar to the Dew Tour’s summer event – it will be based on a cumulative points system with a Dew Cup champion crowned in each discipline at the final winter stop.

Anyone worth their salt in snowboarding will be taking part, with the line-up including the likes of Shaun White, Hannah Teter, Andreas Wiig, Travis Rice and Gretchen Bleiler.

And Hannah Teter’s anticipation for the event is infectious: “I feel like the Dew Tour is gonna be huge and I’m really looking forward to riding on the entire series this year,” said Teter. “The roster of athletes that will be competing on the Winter Dew Tour is sick. It’ll be a fun battle to see who comes away with Dew Cup at the end of the season.”

New events are always full of surprises, but one thing’s for certain – it’s going to be huge!

The event allows all styles of mountain skiing, as each competitor competes in both big-mountain freeride and park and pipe freestyle contests, with this year’s event placing increased emphasis on avalanche awareness and mountain safety.

Red Bull Snowscrapers

February 05, 2009 @ 11:59 AM

Big Air in the Big Apple.

Join 16 of the world’s best snowboarders in New York City on February 5th from 3–9 pm, as they compete to own a piece of a $100,000 prize purse at this new 5-Star Swatch TTR event. Red Bull Snowscrapers marks the debut of the largest snowboarding contest held in an urban setting in North America, complete with top music acts (soon to be announced) and a spectator village located in East River Park.

For the first time ever, Red Bull will create an amazing 90-foot state-of-the-art structure for top riders to own the iconic Manhattan skyline. The athletes will drop in from a nine-story building before flying off the specially constructed kicker toward an immense 80-foot long hip. The innovative hip built by world-renowned designers Frank Wells and Mike Bettera of Snow Park Technology allows riders multiple angles of trajectory - frontside or backside, landing on either the right or left side of the massive 45-degree spine.

With so many angles of approach, options, and opportunity, the athlete with the most creativity will be rewarded handsomely with hefty $50,000.

Iconic snowboarders including Olympic Gold Medalist Shaun White, freestyle / backcountry legend Travis Rice, ultra-progressive phenomenon Pat Moore and others will compete against the majestic backdrop of the East River and the New York City skyline in a contest that should prove to be the biggest winter event in the city.

O’Neill Swatch Big Mountain Pro

February 03, 2009 @ 12:14 PM

Big Mountain Pro

The most innovative freeride contest on the planet, the O’Neill Swatch Big Mountain Pro, is heading into new terrain in 2009. From February 3-10, 12 of the best freeriders in the world – 6 skiers and 6 snowboarders - will be tackling some of the trickiest terrain in the Alps in a bid to win a share of the $60,000 prize money.

Adopting Europe’s vast alpine ranges as a play-ground for exploration and adventure, 12 of the world’s best freeriders will reach some of the most challenging and varied backcountry terrain that the mountains have to offer. The mobile format of the event ensures that the riders are free to roam the Alps with no fixed destination in a quest to find the best snow and mountain faces for the varying conditions.

However, the element of adventure is pushed to the next level this year with the riders poised to hike to more remote backcountry, and camp the nights in mountain huts. This ensures that in addition to the big mountain days on steep rock faces, there will be a more varied mix of freeriding to enjoy.

Freerider Mitch Toelderer is just one of the talented snowboarders eager to start hiking: “I love the more exploratory side to The Big Mountain Pro this year,” he says. “Hiking and staying in huts creates a completely different experience within the mountains. It’s more authentic - especially for this competition. It gives you much more time to get connected with the snow and the face and get a feeling for it. It’s so much quieter and more relaxed to hike – it’s what we would do at home with friends.”

Big Mountain Pro

The other confirmed snowboarders are Jeremy Jones, Xavier de la Rue and Stefan Gimpl, with the two other riders yet to be confirmed.

The six skiers taking part in The Big Mountain Pro 2009 are Cody Townsend, Loris Falquet, Thomas Diet, Richard Permin, Jeremie Heitz and Arnaud Rougier.

The success and popularity of the rider-judged format of the competition sees its continuation for the third year running. Wherever the final face may be, the riders will head to Saalbach-Hinterglemm back in Austria for the unique judging session where they all judge each other’s runs. An overall winner will be crowned, as well as a winner for skiing and one for snowboarding, with a total prize money of $60,000 on offer.

The Swatch O’Neill Big Mountain Pro 2009 will kick off on February 3rd St. Anton in the Arlberg range in the Austrian Alps. Where it will head from there is anyone’s guess – the only certain element is that it will follow the best snow conditions, and will end with a spectacular party in Saalbach-Hinterglemm on February 10th.

Air & Style

January 31, 2009 @ 2:51 PM

Despite the credit crunch cancelling the Air & Style Munich, we’re chuffed to bits that the Billabong Air & Style Innsbruck will still be kicking off in Tirol this January.

Rocking bands. Amazing riders. One colossal quarterpipe. That’s what this comp is all about!

Last season, the Air & Style saw over 12,000 spectators make the Air & Style an unforgettable event. Kevin Pearce became hero of the night with his second Air & Style victory in one season. Jack Mitrani pushed himself to an unbelievable height of 8.70 meters and to the victory of the ‘Swatch Highest Air’. Can anyone go bigger this year?!

With a TTR 6-Star rating, an improved set-up, the news that the prize money has been doubled to $100,000, and an increase in the TTR ranking points, there’s sure to be some fierce competition. What’s more, there will be live bands (last year Queens of the Stone Age headlined along with Dynamite Dulux) making sure the atmosphere will be as spectacular as the riding.

Völkl Snowpark Rally

January 21, 2009 @ 3:55 PM

Do events always need a specific date and a fixed location? Wouldn’t it be just cool if YOU could decide about the where and when?

This year, the Snowpark Rally ignores the laws of time and space and challenges you with various missions from mid December until the end of March. Every month this winter, you will find a new mission on snowparkrally.com which you have to complete with as much creativity as possible. Both snowboarders and freeskiers can participate with both disciplines judged separately.

Simply get your mission, round up your friends, go to your favorite park and get creative with your cam. It doesn’t matter if you use a SLR or a simple digicam. More important is your idea and the execution of the given task!  Afterwards you simply upload your entry onto the contest website. A jury of expert judges will choose the most creative ones, which can then be voted for online.

In each mission you can win cool prizes from Völkl and One Big Park, SalzburgerLand, plus lift tickets and magazine subscriptions are up for grabs! The winning crews of each mission will be invited to the Rally Finals at One Big Park where the last mission has to be accomplished together with the Völkl pros. The winners of both disciplines will join the team for the all-inclusive Völkl Summer Surf Camp 2009 in France.

Pedal for the Planet

January 13, 2009 @ 11:00 AM

Get cycling on a 2009 Earthwatch expedition.

Earthwatch, the international environmental charity, is launching its expeditions for 2009, and top of our list is a cycling trip with a twist.

In 2009 the charity is offering 350 expeditions to 61 research projects in 31 countries. On a new research expedition to Vallée des Baux, in picturesque Provence, volunteers can mountain bike from site to site, working with leading scientists to find out about the stunningly colourful European roller bird. You will discover more about the bird’s populations and habitats, to find out how conservation is working, checking nest boxes, weighing the birds, and measuring plants. Volunteers stay at a field centre with swimming pool six kilometres east of Arles. Volunteers can join a 10-day team in summer 2009.

If pedal power doesn’t ring your bell, get in gear on another Earthwatch expedition, this time surveying brown hyenas in South Africa. Much of your work will take place in Pilanesberg National Park, in the remains of an extinct volcano, where you will carry out wildlife surveys, looking for animals, their footprints and other signs. Volunteers stay at a field camp in the heart of the stunning Mankwe Wildlife Reserve. You can join 12-day teams in January, August or November 2009.

As an Earthwatch volunteer you can stay close to home on a UK expedition, venture into Europe, or go further afield; you could survey whales and dolphins in Scotland or Greece, photograph endangered zebras in the Samburu region of Kenya, or study giant otters in the Pantanal, Brazil.

Earthwatch expeditions range in price from £850 to £1,995. The cost includes training, food, accommodation, medical emergency evacuation and the offsetting of greenhouse gases. It is also a charitable donation which helps to support the research. Flights are extra. Volunteers must be over the age of 18, unless participating on a teen or family team. To find out more or to book call +44 (0)1865 318831 or visit earthwatch.org.

January 12, 2009 @ 2:24 PM

If you’ve over-indulged a bit over the festive season, we have the perfect excuse to haul yourself off the sofa and work off a few of those mince pies.

This gorgeous new stylish running collection from Nike is new for 2009 and set to get more women pounding the pavement than ever before! Launching in January, the Nike Spring running footwear and apparel collection offers runners of all levels exceptional performance benefits with gear that also comes up trumps in the style stakes.

Highlights include the Nike Tempo retro themed running shorts, the Youth Knit Ribbed Tank with leopard print design and the urban Clima-Fit Hooded Jacket that are set to make a statement on the running track this Spring.
In addition to looking stylish, the kit also uses the latest Dri-Fit technology, which works to wick sweat away from the skin, and Clima-Fit material to protect you from the elements.

The Nike Air Start+ and Nike Air Span 6+, are the latest Nike Plus enabled running shoes launching this January. They both feature revolutionary Flywire technology for Nike’s lightest and strongest footwear ever. Both shoes offer superior cushioning, lightweight support, impact protection and come in women’s specific fit.

So whether you’re fresh to the running community or training for a “chasing Paula Radcliffe” marathon time, the new range from Nike will give you the perfect run. Now, time to get cracking with that New Year’s resolution…

SnowKite Masters

January 10, 2009 @ 3:08 PM

The 2009 French SnowKite Masters (SKM) are set to take place in January of next year at Col du Lautaret, Hautes-Alpes, France, and will match up the best French snowkite freestyle champions with the top British snowkite freestyle riders and a host of other snowkiters from around the globe.

Snowkiting, a relatively new discipline, is kind of like a combination between snowboarding and kiteboarding. By introducing kites and thus additional elements like wind force, spectators can expect massive boosts, big airs and a handful of radical tricks never seen before.

In the spirit of snowkiting, the Serre Chevalier SnowKite Masters Championships have been organised to help promote and share the growing stoke this alternative sport provides. Serre Chevalier is renowned for it’s popular snowkiting area, the Col du Lautaret, and sees heaps of kiters throughout the winter months, throwing down their new tricks, teaching beginners and having a good time.

Three times world champ, Guillaume Chastagnol will go into the event with a title to keep, but will have to prove himself worthy, once again, as the influx of new and upcoming riders is increasing daily. He will have a chance to prove his skills however, in the new Best Line Event, created for only the most adventurous and daring. In this event, snowkiters are expected to climb a mountain with a kite, pack the kite up once at the top and then pull the best line back down without the kite. Time, difficulty, altitude and the ride down will be judged. The nature of an event like this is underground, core and extreme - not one for the faint-hearted.

To have a look at the action-packed programme, go to mmv-snowkitemasters.com.

AST Winter Dew Tour

January 08, 2009 @ 11:04 AM

After kicking off in Breckenridge, Colorado last month, the first ever AST Winter Dew Tour is set to make it’s second stop in Vermont from 8-11th January 2009.

Locations for the winter schedule have been confirmed as the following:
Stop 2:  Jan. 8-11, 2009 West Dover, Vt. (Mount Snow Resort)
Stop 3:  Feb. 19-22, 2009 Lake Tahoe, Calif. (Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort)

New events are always full of surprises, but one thing’s for certain – it’s going to be huge!

Red Bull Nanshan Open

January 07, 2009 @ 3:21 PM

The Red Bull Nanshan Open celebrates it’s 7th Birthday from 7-14th January with the globe’s finest sure to attend the slopestyle party, complete with perfect kickers and some of the most imaginative obstacles around.

The Nanshan Open began in Beijing, China seven years ago when a small group of international and local friends gathered for what would be the first snowboard event ever on Chinese soil. Fewer than 20 riders took part, most of them in their very first season riding, and no one anticipated what would be in store for this small event.

Now, seven years later, the Nanshan Open is a world-class event, drawing a roster of top riders and sponsors who have helped make some dramatic progress in what is still a developing snowboard scene.

While its not quite as grand as the Bejing Olympics, this is the Open’s third year as a TTR ranked event. And this year there’s $25,000 prize money up for grabs!

Being China’s only international snowboard event it will once again offer first-class hospitality and riding.  The small crew that puts together this event must be one of the most hard-working in the world.

London to Dakar Charity Surf Challenge

January 06, 2009 @ 5:02 PM

The Sahara Surf team is raising money for UNICEF & Surf Aid International by driving and surfing their way from London to Dakar. For three weeks, starting January 10th 2009, they will grab their boards, start their engines, and make the epic drive to raise money for these two worthy charities.

In addition to taking their low budget vehicles on an epic one-way journey across the desert, the team – all members of the London Surf Club - will go in search of legendary surf breaks along the remote Atlantic coast of West Africa.

Once they reach their goal, the car will be auctioned off to raise money for local charities. And their surf boards won’t make the return journey either: they’ll stay with surf-hungry Senegalese kids, desperate to be in the water and to have the opportunity to be a part of this fast-growing sport. Those staying on dry land can get their hands on one of a car-load of footballs (courtesy of Junior Soccer Coach) which will be given away on route to mark the approaching 2010 World Cup.

rudegirls snowboard weeks are for independent ladies of all ages who have a passion for snowboarding (whether seasoned shredders or complete beginners), a love for the mountains, and a desire to hang out, ride and party with a bunch of like-minded people.

Date: 4th - 11th January 2009

Price: £659 pp/pw which includes: return airport transfers • ensuite accommodation in the centre of Morzine • half board • unlimited wine • 6 day Avoriaz lift pass • Burton Snowboard rental • snowboard tuition • board maintenance workshop • yoga classes • rudegirls goodie bag (sponsored by Burton Snowboards, Anon & Gravis)

Who: rudegirls snowboard weeks cater for all levels of rider ,from complete beginners to advanced freestyle and freeride shredders!

Age: doesn’t matter! The average age of girls who join the week is generally between 22 - 40 yrs old but anyone older or younger is welcome.

Where: Based in Morzine-Avoriaz, the rudegirls accommodation is perfectly situated with good access to both the high altitude ski area of Avoriaz and right in the centre of the lively alpine party village of Morzine. Avoriaz is the birth place of European snowboarding and boasts a huge variety of groomed pistes from nursery greens and cruisey blues to challenging reds and blacks. The awesome tree-lined backcountry presents a freeriders paradise and the snow parks, which are some of the best in Europe, provide a training playground for both novice and pro riders alike.

The Riding: Expert tuition is provided by local snowboarding superstar Angelique Corez-Hubert who won the ladies World Cup in 1995 and the French Snowboard championships in 1998.  “She is one of the best snowboard instructors I have ever witnessed and has the patience of a saint!” Beginners/intermediates will learn/improve upon their basic technique progressing from greens to blues and hopefully some small kickers in the “nano park”. The more advanced/daring riders will get to experience some backcountry trails, perfect their piste riding and hone their freestyle skills in the parks and pipe.

The Relaxing: This winter, rudegirls are offering yoga sessions to stretch out tense muscles and energise tired bodies before hitting the slopes. After a full-on day on the mountain and a refreshing apres-ski beer or hot chocolate, you can head back to the comfort of Chalet Joseph; unwind and chat with a cool drink from the honesty bar on the sunny balcony, chill out in front of one of the inspirational all-girl snowboard DVDs on the widescreen TV and take advantage of the in-chalet sports massage service.

The Eating: Food plays a really important part of any chalet holiday experience so the rudegirls chalet chefs provide a good selection of fresh, healthy, wholesome food and are able to cater for all common dietary requirements. You’ll get an energy-packed breakfast of porridge, eggs, cereal, yogurt and fruit; afternoon tea and cake (which can definitely be justified as snowboarding burns up to 300 calories an hour!) and a well balanced, freshly made three-course evening meal.

The Partying: There is usually a group of crazy party girls who still have enough energy after dinner to take advantage to head into Morzine to sample the loopy super-strength local Mutzig beer, have a cocktail or two in the Buddah bar and dance the night away with the snowboarding seasonnaires to some classic cheesy disco tunes at the Cavern.

The Sleeping: rudegirls stay in the perfectly located Chalet Joseph, which is just 100m from the ski lifts and right in the centre of Morzine town. Chalet Joseph has a really spaciouls lounge area with table football, honesty bar, wide screen tv and in-chalet Media centre. All bedrooms have in-room flat screens dvd/PS2s, ensuite bathrooms and free wireless internet access.

To book your spot, click on rudechalets.com or call 0870 068 7030.

The event allows all styles of mountain skiing, as each competitor competes in both big-mountain freeride and park and pipe freestyle contests, with this year’s event placing increased emphasis on avalanche awareness and mountain safety.

The tour schedule is as follows:
Garmisch, Germany Jan 31-Feb 1, 2009

December 21, 2008 @ 9:59 AM

A Christmas gift with bite…

This Christmas why not treat your man, or indeed yourself, to a challenge that could make even the toughest person weak at the knees…

Diving with sharks is the ultimate challenge and a sure fire way to guarantee an impressive Christmas gift. Mallorca’s Palma Aquarium offers visitors the opportunity to jump into the water and dive with the world’s most feared predators – a once in a lifetime experience open to anyone who has a valid C-Card (PADI, SSI, etc).

Palma Aquarium is the deepest in Europe and is home to an impressive shark tank measuring 33m long, 25m wide and almost 9m deep. Faithfully recreating ocean habitats and eco-systems, the aquarium is a centre of ocean research and conservation with diverse habitats housing over 8000 specimens from 700 species. It has an emphasis on preserving threatened or endangered animal and plant populations and also houses a H20 room, where visitors are shown how to value, respect and protect one of the world’s most precious elements, water.

Professional guides will enter the Big Blue with you, where you will swim for up to half an hour with the sharks. Costs are €200, including full admission to the aquarium for the diver plus two guests, as well as all necessary equipment. You will also receive a 10 per cent discount in the aquarium shop, should you want any special souvenirs of your day. Diving is available on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Learn to Surf with Roxy

December 20, 2008 @ 9:56 AM

Roxy surf

Last year the Roxy Learn to Surf Tour taught over 1000 girls to surf, and over the years Roxy has taught over 10,000 girls to surf - an astounding amount that proves that the Roxy learn to Surf Tour has one thing in mind – to get girls up and riding.

The Roxy Learn To Surf Tour is dedicated to teaching girls the basics of surfing and ocean safety, concentrating your time on being in the water and catching waves. When you arrive at a Roxy Learn To Surf day you will do just that – learn how to ride waves, and subsequently get stoked on surfing.

The Roxy learn To Surf Tour ‘08 will run at premier beaches along the East and West coasts of South Africa. There are four teams of qualified, professional coaches heading up each coastal tour. For a paltry R120 you’ll become a surfer, and will receive an insane Roxy goodie bag. Entries close on the day before the lesson or once bookings are full and the only tour prerequisite is that you know how to swim.

Dates and times of the tours are all available on the Roxy South Africa website roxy.co.za so you can check out when the tour comes to your nearest beach or combine a nice winter sunshine holiday with a fabulous day of wave-riding!

AST Winter Dew Tour

December 19, 2008 @ 10:24 AM

We’re struggling to control our excitement for the launch of the first ever AST Winter Dew Tour, that kicks off December 18th at Breckenridge, Colorado.

The tour consists of three events, the first of which is in December, with the other two being held in January and February 2009. Its current reputation as the biggest Tour in action sports means this expansion has a lot to live up to, but we’re sure the competitions in both freeskiing and snowboarding won’t disappoint.

The introduction of any high profile winter sports competition is always cause for excitement, but the fact that this makes the AST Dew Tour a year-long fixture makes it doubly so.

Locations for the winter schedule have been confirmed as the following:
Stop 1:  Dec. 18-21, 2008 - Breckenridge, Colo. (Breckenridge Ski Resort)
Stop 2:  Jan. 8-11, 2009 West Dover, Vt. (Mount Snow Resort)
Stop 3:  Feb. 19-22, 2009 Lake Tahoe, Calif. (Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort)

New events are always full of surprises, but one thing’s for certain – it’s going to be huge!

Catch the 55DSL Art Exhibition!

December 17, 2008 @ 2:26 PM

55DSL are supporting new talent by giving up the mezzanine level in their Newburgh Street store to showcase the work of budding artists… for free!

The space can be used as a studio or simply for an artist to hold an exhibition in an amazing space in central London. Anyone can apply to to make a bid for the space.

To open the space, 55DSL are holding a collaborative exhibition for friend of 55DSL Mitchy Bwoy and Spanish artist Rabodiga. Entitled “Hell Hath No Fury”, the exhibition opens to the public on the 6th Dec and will run until 19th December.

Mistress & master of styles, respectively, Rabodiga & Mitch have long enjoyed the respect of their peers, blurring the boundaries of commercial design, illustration and street art.

Spanish artist Rabodiga has only very recently graced our shores with her work. Undeniably fresh and original, her art continues to inspire. Flying in the face of traditional graffiti Rabodiga coveys a more intimate and emotional motive to her work. Perhaps subconsciously, she provides a genuine narrative to street art with work that is instinctive and devoid of pretence.

Mitchy Bwoy is a design and culture obsessive. He tirelessly supports and communicates the best of what he feels contemporary life has to offer. With a vast portfolio of work mainly in music and clothing design he continues to innovate and diversify.

The first 20 signed show prints will be sold for £55 (would be £95) - great Christmas presents!

Roxy Chicken Jam 2008

December 12, 2008 @ 9:23 AM

For the third time in a row, Kitzsteinhorn will be playing host to the world’s biggest snowboard event for girls only.

Yes, it’s that time of year again: from December 12-14, 2008, the 6th Roxy Chicken Jam Europe will be kicking off at Zell am See-Kaprun, Austria. The planet’s best female snowboarders will be fighting it out at the Glacier Park for the $50,000 prize money, as well as vital points for the Swatch TTR Women’s World Snowboard Tour. The Roxy Chicken Jam is a 6-Star event, with the winter kick-off in Kaprun setting the course for a successful season.

The slopestyle contest will be held in a jam session format: the female snowboarders are allowed to do as many runs as they want within the given time. This format gives plenty of freedom to the riders as they don’t have to stick every trick into one single run. The jury only rewards the best runs, with the judges looking good execution, bags of style, technical tricks and good use of the park.

Twenty-five invited riders, plus the best five riders from Friday’s qualifications, will take part in the main session on Saturday.

Subsequently, eight riders will compete in the finals. A who’s-who of the snowboard world have already signed up to take part, including last year’s champ Cheryl Maas, Jamie Anderson, Claudia Fliri, Torah Bright and Kjersti Buass Oestgaard.

For this pre-Christmas get-together of the snowboard queens, Zell am See-Kaprun is the ideal location: not only due to the snow-sure Kitzsteinhorn glacier but also because of the three snow parks at the Kitzsteinhorn Mellow Park. At the Glacier Park where the Roxy Chicken Jam will take place, 30 obstacles will wait for the riders. During the event weekend, the Roxy Park for beginners and intermediates and the DC Central Park for advanced and pro riders will also be open to the public.

Check out the trailer for the Chicken by clicking here.

Oooh, now the winter’s really getting started…

The 2009 SnowKite Masters

December 11, 2008 @ 2:37 PM

Snowkite Masters

The 2009 French SnowKite Masters (SKM) will be kicking off at Col du Lautaret, Hautes-Alpes, France, from 10-16 January. The best French snowkite freestyle champions will be matched up with the top British snowkite freestyle riders and a host of other snowkiters from around the globe.

Andy Kirkpatrick

With tales of being trapped on mile high summits in hurricane winds, buried by avalanches, and pushed close to hypothermia whilst lashed to the side of a mountain.

Andy is well known amongst mountaineers for his strange penchant for climbing in extreme conditions in some of the harshest places on the planet. His new show will focus on his winter expeditions to Patagonia, a treacherous mountain range at the southern most portion of South America, including his recent attempt to climb Torre Egger in 2007. Andy’s show gives a real taste of what it’s like to go on a major expedition. A 100 mile-an-hour ride through Andy’s white-knuckle experiences of the last 15 years.

Buy Some Recycled Wrap!

December 08, 2008 @ 10:45 AM

Dreaming of a Green Christmas?

Buying recycled Surfers Against Sewage Christmas cards and wrap is a great way to support SAS and spread the word about the campaign for clean, safe recreational water to friends and family.

We get the lowdown from SAS Merchandise Manager Wendy Nicolson: “This Christmas you can join in the festive spirit by sending your loved ones our stunning colourful and thought-provoking cards and gift wrap, but you’ll also be doing your bit for the environment as they’re made from 100% post consumer waste recycled paper that could have otherwise ended up in landfill. There’s an environmental campaign message about marine litter on the reverse of the cards and an ingenious cut-out-and-keep suggestion on the inside cover to encourage the recipient to reuse the tree image as next year’s gift tag!”

This year’s cards have been beautifully photographed by award-winning photographer Andy Hughes and cost a measly £3.15 for a pack of 10!

They also have a new range of gorgeous gift wrap printed on 100% post consumer waste recycled paper priced at £4.50 for 10 sheets.

Vans Triple Crown of Surfing

December 02, 2008 @ 9:21 AM

Vans Triple Crown of Surfing’s next stop Sunset Beach...

From November 24th until December 6th, the globe’s best surfers will be descending on Sunset Beach for the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing, the second men’s contest of the 2008 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and the final WQS event on the ASP World Qualifying Series Tour schedule. The results will help determine the WCT line-up for the 2009 ASP World Tour.

Sunset Beach is the venue of this event. Easily picking up swell from a variety of directions, the surf break of Sunset is a deep-water spot several hundred yards out to sea, so it’s best to bring your binoculars for this event to get truly close to the action. The main peak features a heaving, jacked-up takeoff that reshapes itself into a hollow, sucky and THICK wall of water. Not for the feint-hearted, Sunset Beach is notorious for hideous wipeouts and long hold-downs underwater for those who haven’t yet mastered the break.

Defending champion: Makua Rothman (Hawaii)

Roxy Pro Hawaii

December 01, 2008 @ 3:21 PM

What: Roxy Pro Hawaii, ASP Women’s World Tour Event #7
Where: Sunset Beach, Oahu Hawaii
When: 24 November - 6 December 2008

Roxy is pleased to present the 14th Annual Roxy Pro Hawaii at Sunset Beach. Set to kick off on Oahu’s North Shore from November 24th until December 6th, it promises to be the biggest, heaviest wave contest on the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) Women’s World Tour.

In addition to being the seventh stop of the ASP Tour, the event is also the second jewel in the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing.  The contest, which will be broadcast live on the web from roxy.com, will take place over two days within the 12-day holding period.

The Roxy Pro Hawaii is the longest running women’s professional shortboard competition in Hawaii and will once again play a crucial part in deciding the 2008 Women’s World Tour Champion. Coming into the event, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) holds a small lead in the ratings over Roxy team-rider Sofia Mulanovich (Peru), the defending Roxy Pro Hawaii and 2005 Women’s World Tour Champion.

With the ratings so close and the lead changing hands multiple times throughout this year’s tour, the Roxy Pro Hawaii will play a critical role in determining the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour Champion.

“We are thrilled to be continuing the tradition of women’s big-wave surfing in Hawaii with the Roxy Pro Hawaii,” said Randy Hild, EVP of Global Marketing, Roxy.  “Sunset Beach is a defining wave and proving ground for any surfer, male or female, and Roxy is proud to offer women the chance to leave their mark on this famed break.”

Sunset Beach is regarded as the most difficult wave in the world to surf well. It is a huge expanse of water with the primary take-off zone located more than 250 yards out to sea. Swells converge on that zone from a variety of directions that range from west, all the way to north-east. If a surfer doesn’t know her way around the lineup, surfing Sunset is akin to being lost at sea in a maelstrom.

The 2008 Roxy Pro Hawaii will feature the top 17 ranked women on the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Tour, as well as three wildcard entrants who will be determined in the Roxy Trials.

Roxy Team Rider, Sally Fitzgibbons will be among the contestants vying for the wildcards, with her spot already secured for the 2009 Tour, Fitzgibbons is looking to make an early impression at this year’s contest. 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Juniors Champion Laura Enever was also granted a trialist spot, along with Bruna Schmitz, Coco Ho, Carissa Moore and Lee Ann Curren.

The Roxy Pro Hawaii is the second in a series of two Roxy Pro events on the ASP Women’s World Tour schedule. The tour’s first event of the year the Roxy Pro Gold Coast (March) was won by Sofia Mulanovich, who hopes to lock down her second world title in Hawaii.

For more information on the Roxy Pro Hawaii and the full trials list please visit roxy.com

Human Touch Board

If you’ve been a little lax in your fitness routine and want to avoid strains and sore muscles on the slopes this winter, the Human Touch Board could be just the solution.

This clever board imitates the feel of snowboarding, surfing or skateboarding to give you a good workout whilst helping to tone and condition all the right muscles for boarding.  The movements of the board are designed to exercise and challenge your core muscles, specifically your foot and ankle stabilizers, calf, quadriceps, hamstrings and stomach.

In addition, the Human Touch Board helps to improve posture, balance, coordination and flexibility in preparation for a ski or surf holiday.

Roxy Pro Women’s Surf Contest

November 24, 2008 @ 8:07 AM

Roxy Pro

The Roxy Pro Women’s Surf Contest will be kicking off from 24 November – 6 December at Sunset Beach.

This ASP World Championship Tour women’s event is the penultimate contest of the 2008 Women’s World Tour, so will play a critical role in deciding this year’s world champion, as well as the WCT women’s lineup for 2009.

Easily picking up swell from a variety of directions, the surf break of Sunset Beach is a deep-water spot several hundred yards out to sea, so it’s best to bring your binoculars for this event to get truly close to the action. The main peak features a heaving, jacked-up take off that reshapes itself into a hollow, sucky and thick wall of water. Not for the faint-hearted, Sunset Beach is notorious for hideous wipeouts and long hold-downs underwater for those who haven’t yet mastered the break. No doubt defending champ Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) will be wanting to show the assembled wave-riders how it’s done.

Part of the 26th annual Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the Roxy Pro is sure to feature the world’s best surfers battling it out against the world’s biggest and best waves of Oahu’s famous North Shore in a bid to be crowned champ and take home a share of the $750,000 prize pot.

From park to powder, campers will be pushing their riding each day on the mountain under the watchful eye of the Animal pro team - including the likes of half-pipe master Dom Harington, Olympic contender Kate Foster and freestyle geniuses Johno Verity and Sonia Shaw.

Campers are being encouraged to travel to the camp on the snow train from St Pancras on the Friday night ready to join the camp’s base in Bourg St Maurice bright and early on Saturday morning. Bourg St Maurice is base camp to high altitude resorts Les Arcs, St Foy, Val d’Isere and Tignes to name but a few, meaning the group will get to pick the best spots for the conditions each day.

By way of reward for your good citizenship (and to help beat the credit crunch), the Animal Snowcamp is offering a 5% discount to all campers who go green and travel by train. This year they’re also adding a little luxury to the mix at the BoardnLodge EcoLodge which offers a sauna so campers can alleviate any aches and pains at the end of a hard day riding. Add to this gourmet cooking, a minibus powered by restaurant waste oil and power from a green energy provider, and you’ve got the recipe for a good week maxing it up on the slopes and a guilt-free good time!!

The Animal Snowcamp costs £690 and includes lift pass, full board accommodation, all transfers, tuition and guiding - not to mention a free Animal goodie bag!

The camps are being held Saturday to Saturday on the following dates:
14th Mar - 21st March
21st Mar - 28th March

Book an Eco-Friendly Trip to the Slopes

November 18, 2008 @ 2:30 PM

Park City

Park City Mountain Resort is leading the way when it comes to sustainable tourism – and we are not talking about simply re-using your towels!

Not only has it been awarded the 2008 ‘Clif Bar Silver Eagle Award for Excellence in Energy Conservation’, one of the USA’s top environmental awards, but it has also announced that it will offset 100 percent of its power from renewable energy sources. In purchasing 13.9 million kilowatts of renewable energy credits the resort will avoid nearly 19 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually which is equal to removing 1,853 cars from the road… American cars at that!

“Our decision to offset 100 percent is another positive step towards our commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Peter Curtis, president and general manager of Park City Mountain Resort.

The switch to renewable energy will be invisible to a visitor who travels to Park City but the resort hopes their tourists can enjoy peace of mind knowing that all of Park City Mountain Resort’s electricity is now coming from 100 percent renewable sources.

Park City Mountain Resort is committed to being the leader in environmental sustainability having reduced their carbon footprint by 97 percent since 2005. In addition, the Resort continues to install programmable timers/thermostats to reduce energy use and maintains its recycling initiatives as well as 100 percent use of bio-diesel including a free passenger bus between Park City and its sister resorts. The resort has also protected over 6,400 acres of open space through purchases and development agreements. Phew, that’s quite a set of green credentials! Now we just have to work out how to get there in an eco-friendly way…

Get your X-Dance entry in!

November 14, 2008 @ 2:24 PM

If you fancy yourself as the next Minghella or Spielberg, jot this date in your diary, as November 20th is the entry deadline for this year’s X-Dance Film Festival!

Last year was a breakthrough year for X-Dance, with a record number of entries from some outstanding filmmakers, plus a beautiful big theater and record attendance for the screenings in Salt Lake City. Some of the top films used X-Dance to launch their movies, with the Bra Boys having their North American premiere playing to a standing-room-only record crowd! Travis Pastranna, Tony Hawk, Tara Dakides, and all the Bra Boys (all the way from Australia), were in attendance to enjoy the premier event in the world of action sports filmmaking.

Last year, over 200 entries from all over the world were narrowed down to 40 films. The film ‘199 Lives’ (Dir. Greg Godfrey, Studio 411 Productions) took top prize of ‘Best Film’, with its incredible action, story, and cinematography. ‘Bra Boys’ won ‘Best Documentary’, John Decesare won ‘Best Director’ for ‘The Windsurfing Movie’, and the ‘Emerging Filmmaker Award’ went to Britton Cailloutte for ‘Sliding Liberia’

Attention from Hollywood soon followed, with two films picked up for theatrical distribution and several of the other filmmakers were signed on for major distribution.  This is just the start for the filmmakers of X-Dance.

To be a part of this year’s festivals, all submissions must be made via the X-Dance website. Enter your film now!
